Android is already present in more than 2 billion active devices worldwide. “It’s a privilege to be able to serve so many people,” said Sundar Pinchai, Google’s CEO. This number makes it the most widely used operating system in the world. In comparison, in 2015 there were 1.4 billion devices. Apple’s iOS runs almost on 1.7 billion devices.

But the amount is not enough for Google. The search engine plans to launch a new version of Android, Android Go, focused on devices with very limited technical specifications, with less than 1 GB of memory and in regions where connectivity is not always guaranteed.

As revealed by Google in the developer conference, in Android Go, Chrome will have the function of saving data activated by default and there will be a tool in the system settings to control the data transmission. In addition, Google Play will highlight apps and games that work best on these phones.

Android Go will be released in 2018.
